May, 2015: Current Design Trends

The experience of attending the High Point Furniture Market is fascinating, rewarding and intense. This international market is the largest and most important home furnishings market in the world. Manufacturers, Interior designers, retailers and the media come from 50 states and more than 100 foreign countries to introduce or view new trends and see "what's hot." I would like to share with you the trends introduced at the spring 2015 "Market."

Color
The presence of neutrals, gray, ivory and beige were complemented with splashes of strong colors such as emerald green, orange and sunflower yellow. White or cream combined with navy blue was a key theme. Blues were frequently used in sofas, chairs, pillows and benches -- including indoor and outdoor furniture. Blues, because of their familiarity and ability to combine well with different materials and metals, are easy to incorporate in any d├ęcor.

Surprisingly, pink also made an appearance at this Market -- from soft to stronger pinks. Pink was visible on chairs and even a sofa or two.

Texture
Repurposed metals and woods were frequently viewed on beds, tables and cabinets -- appealing to lovers of industrial design. Vintage finishes in different soft shades clearly broadened the audience for these items. Metals such as copper, zinc, chrome, brass and stainless steel were seen everywhere; some metals were shiny while others were brushed to deliver a lower luster.

Space Solutions
This spring many of the casegoods had very clean architectural lines appealing to the consumer who likes Mid-Century Modern, Art Deco or a more Contemporary appearance. These items provide exceptional organization and storage beyond traditional tables, night stands, chests and dressers.

Style
Interestingly, upholstered and tufted beds (with or without wood frames) with nail head trim were included in most collections regardless of their degree of formality. Tufting was displayed in leather and fabric on sofas, chairs and other pieces such as benches.

Even though there were plenty of new and innovative designs, classic and traditional styles were also present as they transcend time.

And how might you design the interior if the home was constructed by stone craftsmen where each wall and arch was a masterpiece?

See how award-winning interior designer Dean Huntley designed a beautiful interior for this home in The Greenbrier located in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.
